The Uplift Fund: Transforming Trans Lives.
Donation protected
Welcome beautiful people, first of all thank you for showing up. I am Cairo, a transgender man from the UK.
I work as a freelance guest speaker/ facilitator and have over 10 years of experience on projects that have the direct aim to improve community wellbeing, diversity and inclusion e.g. Stonewall, NHS, Budweiser, Kent Police, Diversity Roles Models, Southbank Centre & Milk Presents.
I have been involved in many national projects and global campaigns that champion trans visibility and awareness. If you wish to know more about me or if you just like to be through & do background checks here are the links: https://becomingcairo.blogspot.com/

My Story:
5 years ago, I took a big brave step to begin my medical transition.
My gender dysphoria was getting worse by the day, It took a lot to pluck up the courage to speak to a GP about being referred to the Gender Identity Clinic (GIC). My GP told me with absolute certainty: “Being transgender is a trend! And anyway, people who transition are not happier.” His prescription for my transition was anti-depressants and general counselling. He did not want to even consider allowing me to access to the GIC.
"Nearly 80% of respondents said that they had avoided seeking medical treatment out of fear of experiencing transphobia and nearly half had received incorrect medical treatment due to transphobia."- Galop 2020.
Eventually I got him to agree to send my form, 1 year later my letter from the Gender Identity Clinic finally arrived!!! I rushed to open it and just like that, I had been discharged from the GIC because my GP failed to cooperate. I felt that hurt, not just for me but on behalf of every single transgender person they just drop without a care.
The Truth Of Matter is:
The are 3 key reasons why people don’t make it to the GIC:
1) patient has gone another route.
2) GP failed to cooperate.
3) Patient has deceased.
Truthfully, it made me think about all those who did not make it to the their first appointment.
"More than one in four (27 per cent) trans young people have attempted to commit suicide and nine in ten (89 per cent) have thought about it. 72 per cent have self-harmed at least once." -Youth Chances 2014
I am one of thousands of transgender people who have experienced hardship, discrimination when trying to get access to much needed healthcare. The truth is globally there aren’t many grants available to help cover surgery fees, yet it is the most expense part of transitioning. On this site alone there are 39,000 trans people who are in need of help.
My mission is to create a Community Interest Company (CIC) that will provide an annual fund that will directly improve the quality of life for transgender people. The Uplift fund will provide financial aid to help uplift transgender people all over the UK by making it possible to access the health care they need. It is challenging enough navigating a transition without suddenly becoming indebted to surgery costs.
To drive this campaign forward I pledge to run 1021Km before the end of 2021.
so please sponsor me, because come lockdown or snow, I will keep going until my mission is completed.
The Budget:
98% of the budget will be allocated and awarded as a medical grant to Trans and Non Binary people helping cover part of their surgery fees.
1% of the budget will allow x 20 young trans / non binary people to attend an annual meet up where we will put on a 1 day wellness event that will aid to uplift the trans community.
1% will go on start up costs, marketing, and fundraising material - to allow the grant to continue to be sustainable long term. We will also hire trans artists and where ever possible use trans led business to further support the community.
What would a grant like this achieve? FREEDOM.
By offering annual grants for gender affirming surgeries we can provide hope and help reduce anxiety and distress surrounding financing private healthcare. When someone is struggling with gender dysphoria, having surgery is not only life changing but a life saving treatment.
As someone who was blessed to receive a similar grant from Point of Pride USA,
I can tell you personally, it changed my life. I am forever grateful. Grants like this are few and far between. Which is why it is so important to me that we make this happen! I know first hand the value and impact if has.
(Don't judge the hair- we have all survived 2020). Just Look at that smile and tell me you don't want to make another person that happy!
