Thomas A. Dutton 1952-2017
Cincinnati Professor of Community Engagement
Miami University Department of Architecture and Interior Design
Leader, Scholar, Teacher, Student, Colleague, Advocate, Agitator, Mentor, Friend, Freedom Fighter, Son, Brother, Uncle, Husband and Father.
Tom Dutton was a caring and passionate person whose life’s work was to serve the underserved and the poor, and to fight for basic human rights for all. He was committed to challenging unjust systems and the dominant narratives that favored the privileged and excluded people on the economic and social margins. Tom channeled his life’s work into creating the Miami University Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine. Through continuing collaboration with university colleagues and community members, he established the Over-the-Rhine Residency Program, an interdisciplinary program with students living, learning, and serving in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Tom’s deep wish was that this work continues beyond his death. Current and former students, colleagues, friends and family have the same wish to further his legacy.
This fundraiser is just the beginning. The family seeks to use the money raised here to establish a fund through Miami University to sustain the Center and its programs, and to foster the values and goals of racial, economic, and social justice it embodies.
