Thomas Cooper Layman's Eagle Scout Project

My name is Thomas Cooper Layman, Life Scout Boy Scout Troop 418, Homestead, FL.
Eagle Project: Replacement of flag pole at American Legion Post 43 and memorial garden.
I am the oldest scout in my patrol and upon completion of my Eagle board of review will be my troop’s first Eagle Scout. My journey in scouting has been long and wonderful. I joined scouting ten years ago at the age of seven as a Wolf Scout and since then I have learned and experienced things, things I never thought possible. I have been camping in seven different states, been rock climbing in the Appalachian Mountains and canoed to islands that are not accessible to larger boats. But the memory of scouting that sticks with me the most was participating in the Freedom Flight. I remember standing at attention as I waited for the veterans to disembark from the plane. It was an honor to shake hands with them and thank them for their service. I don’t believe I could, nor would I ever want to, forget the look of joy in some of those men’s eyes as the entire airport recognized and appreciated their sacrifice. I want to do something for those men and care for the flag that they wore on their uniforms. I have decided to replace the flagpole at American Legion Post 43 in Homestead, FL for my Eagle Scout project. The current flagpole is bolted to the side of the building that is both difficult and dangerous to use.

I am grateful to the American Legion, as our charter organization, and I want thank them for supporting BSA Troop 418 by replacing their current flagpole with a free-standing twenty-five foot flagpole that will be both easier and safer for the American Legion. I appreciate your support for Eagle project. The flag will be located toward the main entry to the city of Homestead.
I am also selling wooden, handmade desk flag holders to raise funds for this project.
