A mighty giant is falling... Our friend, a giant with a huge heart has days/weeks/months to live.
“You know, the Greeks didn’t write obituaries, they only asked one question when a man died, ‘Did he have passion?’” – Serendipity
Let us introduce you to our friend, Thorin
With Dave generally being the tallest person in the room at 6’ 3” and Bonnie usually the shortest at 5’ ½”, we both had to quickly adjust to Thorin’s height when we met him. Hell, the guy played defense for the aptly named Ursinus College Bears. When Dave gives him a hug hello and goodbye, his head rests on his chest; but it’s what’s inside that chest that truly makes Thorin a giant.
Everything about the man is big: his heart, his personality, his drive, his intelligence, his laugh, his competitive streak (as anyone who has spent as much time as we have with him at a board game or Dungeons & Dragons session), and his passion for life.
It was this passion that had him forge his path in college, marry a beautiful soul in Shannon, his wife of twenty-five years, live in Holland, become a professional writer and editor, and then, with Tony and Dave, create a successful podcast, “3 Wise DMs”, from nothing more than his idea that he explained over a cup of coffee. He moved mountains in his four decades.
That’s what makes what is happening seem so unfair. As Bonnie said, “A mighty giant is falling.”
It is heartbreaking news that our friend has days/weeks/months to live. Last year, Thorin was experiencing some slight stomach upset that was not resolving itself. After consulting with his doctor and some follow-up tests, Thorin was diagnosed with Stage Four Colon Cancer. To say that this was a devastating shock to everyone is wildly understated, as anyone who has dealt with the fallout of cancer understands – especially when it comes like a thief in the night.
Then, on September 16th of this year, he was told that his fight was coming to an end. After some further complications, Thorin, Shannon, and his doctors decided to end all chemotherapy treatments and move him into hospice care.
To help our friends, we have created a Beef-n-Beer to honor this amazing man who is loved by so many. Our fingers are crossed that he can see how much he is loved and the ripples in the pond that his love has produced. The date is quick because he doesn’t know how much time he has. We would love everyone to honor this passionate, lovable, beautiful soul whom we have spent countless hours with, in laughter and in love. We hope that this can serve as a beautiful capstone on a life well-lived while that life still beats within his breast.
Please donate to the Go-Fund-Me to help his wife after he passes, and/or by sharing the information, even $1 adds up.
