What’s this “Thread Up Oxford” thing you’ve been hearing about?!?
(If you live in or near Oxford, Ohio, in the 45056 zip of SW Ohio)
Thread Up Oxford is an organization devoted to changing how the local and regional community uses textiles. The goal is to eliminate most of the textile waste that our current consumer culture sends to a landfill. One important message that Thread Up Oxford has been bringing awareness to is that, as a community, we need to remove ourselves from the “fast fashion” cycle of buying massive amounts of clothing that are obsolete or damaged within months of purchase.
When you walk into a Walmart or a TJ Maxx (as many of us do here in Oxford), you see a space devoted to enormous amounts of clothing, like in a grocery store. You can also purchase clothes at a mall at Hollister or American Eagle or Old Navy or H&M or....you can also purchase lots of last season expensive clothes for a deep discount at a Goodwill...and there are so many online thrift stores now...it’s no wonder we all have so many clothes.
Thread Up Oxford has taken on the real, challenging, need in the Oxford community of redistributing donated clothes to those with a hardship, because with that many clothes in circulation, there is no excuse for anybody to go without quality clothing. We have already had several successful free shopping events in a lower income neighborhood in town and are arranging more and in other locations. A healthy community has a healthy wardrobe!
We have redistributed bedding, towels, tablecloths, sewing and craft fabric, and lots and lots of clothing to the following: students in the Talawanda School District, clients at the Family Resource Center, shoppers at the Talawanda/Oxford Pantry and Social Services mobile pantry, the Army of Kindness Miami community food pantry, Alleycat Spay and Rescue Clinic, Oxford Cares Backpack Program, Liberty Acres Animal Shelter, Training Tracks Canine Learning Station, and for reuse and upcycling efforts of many community members.
We can’t just redistribute fabrics without educating the community about using less textiles overall! One major focus we are bringing awareness to is “slow fashion” or sustainable wardrobes. (Shout Out here to Gini Maddock’s Snazzy Threads high end thrift shop and gallery where she educates on “slow fashion”). The organization has been invited to work with Miami University departments in a variety of ways, connecting Miami students to the principles of sustainable wardrobes. Programs and presentations will be coming up on this topic as well.
What can the organization do with different levels of funding?
$2000 -- pay for fees to acquire 501c3 status, pay for storage space for unsorted donations, pay the awesome MU student who will be designing our logo, pay for a paltry amount of materials for marketing, programming, and educational materials, pay for hot chocolate and popcorn for our volunteer team.
$3000 -- pay for fees to acquire 501c3 status, pay for storage space for unsorted donations, pay the awesome MU student who will be designing our logo, pay for a less paltry amount of materials for marketing, programming, and educational materials, continue memberships to Community Development Professionals (they ROCK, the training is AMAZING) and the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, pay for a pizza party for our volunteer team AND the hot chocolate and popcorn.
$5000 -- 501c3 status fees, display and storage equipment for sorted donations, storage space, logo, pay for a decent amount of materials for marketing, programming, and educational materials, continue memberships to CDP (they ROCK, the training is AMAZING) and the Oxford Chamber, pay for a huge mini-golf outing at that weird place in Fairfield PLUS a pizza party for our volunteer team AND the hot chocolate and popcorn.
$10,000 -- Everything above and then looking very seriously at acquiring a retail space. Preferably out on College Corner Pike to have better access for all community members. Also looking very seriously at finding a beater pickup truck.
$25,000 -- RETAIL SPACE CAN HAPPEN HERE, RIGHT AWAY.
$50,000 -- Dreams really do come true. Time to change the world one community at a time!
SPECIAL PROMOTION: Donate $150+ and receive a customized, upcycled wreath right in time for the holidays! (Pictured below)
