About 15 years ago my youngest sister, Teresa, was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, taking it in stride while caring for her two sons. Teresa was in remission for years, and thought she was in the clear
In September 2018 Teresa had made the major life decision to go back to post secondary school at Georgian College and attend the business program. Returning to school as an adult is a daunting task, but Teresa buckled down and worked hard, and had a very successful first semester. After a short break Teresa starting her second semester of school, but felt under the weather for a few weeks and just couldn't shake it. She started experiencing chest pains that brought her to the hospital where she under went a battery of tests. The doctor returned with the unimaginable: she had CML - chronic myelogenous leukaemia. The treatment plan included regular medications to keep the leukaemia under control, but it wasn't a 'cure'. There is currently no cure for CML.
Teresa soldiered on, went back to school, and started her internship, and was starting to feel better. Then her annual mammogram revealed that she had triple negative breast cancer. Triple negative breast cancer isn't responsive to typical hormone therapy, so further action was needed. Teresa underwent surgery, and is currently completing her chemo and radiation therapy. The doctors have told her she will be unable to work or attend school for the next year as she receives treatment and recovers.
Living in a rural area requires Teresa to travel several hours each way for appointments, treatment, and follow ups. This also requires her family to accompany her, and the costs of treatment, travel, accommodations, are piling up. Since Teresa was in school, she isn't eligible to receive EI, and there is no disability support from former employers.
We are hoping to be able to raise enough money to help Teresa cover the costs associated with treatment and support her during this difficult time so she can focus on getting better.
Any money raised will go to help cover the costs of travel to and from appointments, overnight stays for treatment, additional medication and insurance costs, and household expenses while she is off work.
