The making of a Public Art Installation
Donation protected
Justice Through Arts is raising money to fund our first installation in London to draw attention to the reality of homelessness in the UK. With this project, we want to achieve the opposite of the ignored reality, which is to make homelessness visible and inspire reflection on the individual experience of rough sleepers.
Justice Through Arts is a non-profit community group that was founded by activist/ artist Alketa Xhafa - Mripa with the view to raise awareness on various social phenomenons and injustices through public art.
Our mission as a group is to raise awareness and support towards human rights issues and community values. We create projects addressing specific topics and propose critical interventions within existing social systems that catalyse social exchange and inspire community participation.
Recent studies reveal that empathy for homelessness is plummeting while the number of rough sleepers is rising, so we are coming together with a team of creatives to produce a dynamic public art mural to have the voices of rough sleepers heard, and invite them to participate in the creation of the work.
Our project is inspired by the memory of John, a beloved member of our community, and his dog Sugar, who according to his best friends, felt most at home at West Hampstead Bridge.
Network Rail have offered Justice Through Arts the space of West Hampstead Bridge for a mural. We are teaming up with local artists to create a project that will commemorate the lives of rough sleepers.
Joined by a group of graffiti artists, photographer, and a documentary maker we will be working with local rough sleepers to create a mural, and produce a book of stories and portraits.
Funds are needed for the following:
- 15 -20 prints of large -format portrait photographs
- 300 cans of spray paint
- 200 stencil kits for 20 metres of wall x two sides across from West Hampstead tube station
-50 litres of acrylic paint
-Stationary for the use of the project
- Daily lunch for 15 -20 rough sleepers who will participate in interviews, and the making of the mural, ranging from 4-5 days over the course of 4 weeks
Your donations could have an incredible impact in raising awareness on the issue of homelessness.
Please help us spread the word by sharing with your networks.
Thank you.
