Thru-Hiking for Women’s Health Rights
Tax deductible
Since the beginning of May, I’ve been thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail on the west coast. Due to the Supreme Court’s appalling decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on June 24th, I’ve decided to use this as an opportunity to help fundraise for women’s health rights. The court’s decision in effect has removed a woman’s autonomy over her own body and in doing so will endanger the lives of many and further perpetuate the poverty cycle in communities.
I firmly believe that male silence on this issue is essentially condoning the ill effects and I will not stand idle. An oppressive act against one sect of the population is an oppressive act against the entire population.
The fundraiser target amount is $2,500 and will be for Planned Parenthood of South Texas, a community that I have called home for nearly two decades. Texas has already successfully passed oppressive bills against women through the state legislature and stands to be one of the most vehement entities against women now that they have been given the green light by the Supreme Court.
I will also be making a contribution to this fundraiser, which will be tied to my performance on the trail and the amount raised. I have had a goal of completing the 2,650 mile trail within 100 days since I started. As of this writing, I will need to average 34 miles per day to achieve this goal. This will be a tall order and the margin of error will be slim but I am confident that I can succeed. If I complete the trail in 100 days or less, I will be donating $500. For every day over 100 I will donate an additional $50. Furthermore, I will donate 5% of the total amount raised up to an additional $500. Hopefully this will encourage more donations and be another motivator for myself on trail. I greatly appreciate any donation given and even simply sharing this fundraiser goes a long way so thank you in advance!
I set out on this adventure thinking this was for me but I was mistaken. I am now dedicating this thru-hike to all the women and girls in my life including my mother, sister, grandmother, aunts, cousins, and friends. I have the utmost amount of love and respect for the impact that they have made in my life. Simply put: her body, her choice.
Cheers,
Jake aka Tummy Tea
