Hi my name is Mike Peterson and I am President of Thumb Allied Skate Association Inc. On behalf of the youth (and quite a few nostalgic adults) I propose we spend about the same amount as a local crop farmer pays for a new tractor on the construction of an outdoor skate park. Our organization is the product of a two year initiative to get more people outdoors to give them a fun healthy outlet. The correlation between good mental health and active sports is unmistakable. Veterans in our area are picking up skateboarding as an effective treatment for PTSD.
Working with the city of Bad Axe the last two years was integral to acquiring a few ramps from the city of Stockbridge, MI. Two local businesses then donated a combined $2900 to re-skin the ramps with Skate-Lite material. It is sufficient for us at this time to grow a base and learn on, however in 3-5 years that simply won't be enough.
We have several possible companies in mind that specialize in skate park building and 1 very basic quote of $350,000-$400,000 at this time. We also have a proposed 3D Park design idea built with considerable input from local area skaters, bikers, scooter riders, and roller bladers both novice and experienced.
Our goal as a newly formed nonprofit is to give back to our community in a way that promotes roller sports as a whole, that brings our diverse community together by supporting what they LOVE through various services, and to promote good mental health and outreach through various community based programs. Bad Axe is changing for the better in 2023. Our children will be safe outdoors and looked after this year. Don't have a board? It's our mission to get everyone on a board who wants to try it. We are even working on making our own from locally sourced Maple here in the Thumb.
We cannot do any of this without financial support backing these outstanding leaders in our community. It's our belief that an investment like this into our local youth especially assures they mature into well grounded individuals with a sense of brotherhood (and sisterhood) and direction in their lives.
Please consider making a recurring weekly, monthly, or yearly payment to our nonprofit organization. Our financial records are public, and we hope after our 1st year as an official nonprofit, that we will be able to report back how many people we've helped.
Thank you for your time,
Mike Peterson
