A Helping Hand for Tigrayan Refugees
Donation protected
There is a humanitarian crisis in Tigray, the Northern regional state of Ethiopia.
On November 4, 2020, the Ethiopian government waged war on the Tigray Regional Government. This political conflict has resulted in mass-displacement of over 1 million innocent civilians. According to UNHCR, as of December 15, 2020, nearly 50,000 Tigrayans have fled to Sudan for refuge. The harrowing accounts of the refugees tell us they have escaped airstrikes, machete killings and feared for their lives. Many of the refugees that fled to Sudan left immediately, and as a result of a region wide telecommunications blackout, became separated from their families. Filippo Grandi, the head of UNHCR recently visited the Tigrayan refugees and stated, “I have never seen so much separation.”
Despite a declaration by the federal government that the mission in Tigray is ‘completed’ as of November 28, fighting still continues. UN Agencies estimate that the conflict could drive over 200,000 Tigrayan refugees to Sudan in the coming months, including children, expecting-mothers and the elderly. It is currently impossible to deliver money and essentials to those in need in Tigray as the conflict still rages and humanitarian access, as well as banks, remain closed. This is our effort to give back directly to those in need. Our mission is to provide relief for the displaced refugees that were forced to escape their homes with nothing but the clothes they wore.
100% of donations will go to the refugees fleeing the conflict in Tigray through organizations working on the ground. Ethiopian Youth Refugees in Sudan is one of the associations working on the ground in Sudan. Members of this association were born and raised in Sudan and know first hand the impact of war, and being a refugee. Based on their lived experience and their assessment of the needs of the refugees in Al Qadarif, Hashba and Hamdait, refugee camps close to the Ethiopian border, the organization has already begun providing clothing, food, and other essential items like medicine and food to refugees fleeing the war in Tigray.
The organization needs additional support, your donations will be used to purchase basic necessities near those local communities. Ethiopian Youth Refugees in Sudan will provide photos of their receipts of their purchases.
