Joe Kaianuanu Lomu was diagnosed with osteosarcoma January 12, 2023 after a tumor was discovered in his left knee. Joe just started chemo at the Primary Children's Hospital, the night of January 26, 2023 and will continue to have treatments for 10 weeks, then potential surgeries and rehabilitation that will follow. We've been told that this whole process will take at least 7 months.
Joe is the fourth oldest of Papa and I. Joe has five brothers and three sisters. Papa and I both work full time to support our family. Since finding out about Joes' cancer, it's literally left us speechless. When I think of my son Joe, the first word that comes to mind is loyal. If you earn his trust, he will stay loyal to you to the very end. Joe is also funny, protective when it comes to his siblings and the biggest jokester. Joe is also very active and an athletic kid. He loves football, it's what he lives and breathes for. He loves everything about football, discipline, teamwork, physical toughness, working out, and just being with all of his teammates he considers family. He went from preparing to beast out his senior year to being told he has cancer and that he's never going to be able to play high school football again.
Since hearing the news, Its' been rough for all of us, especially for our Joe. It's moments like these, where I’m truly grateful for our beliefs. Our belief in Jesus Christ and that God has a plan. I have no idea what that plan may be and I can honestly say Joe doesn't want another plan, he doesn't care for anything else but his football plan. And I don't blame him one bit. He's still young and can't see what the God has planned for his future.
I'm also grateful for my husband and all of our children. Joe looks to me and Papa for everything, when he's going through a hard time, he looks to his older siblings for advice and direction. First and foremost, I have to remind my son Joe that he is not Joe the football player, but that he is Joe, a son of God. Second, that he is loved beyond measure. I love him, his dad loves him and his siblings love him the most.
Thank you for everyone who has been praying for our family, especially our Joe. Your prayers, give us hope and courage to journey into the unknown. It's the reason why I created Joe’s IG page @joelomu44 and his Facebook page Joe lomu. We’ve been so touched by reading and learning about others who have had the same cancer as Joe. Their story’s have uplifted our spirits and have inspired us to share our journey as well. So thank you! thank you! thank you for all of your prayers. WE LOVE YOU AND APPRECIATE EACH OF YOU!
