I suffer from an uncommon congenital defect called pectus excavatum. Basically, my sternum is being drawn inwards. My case is severe, as it is leaving me with only a few inches of space between sternum and spine. This lack of space causes my heart, lungs, and esophogus to be pressed against, causing pain, and abnormal function and shape.
My heart is being pinned between my sternum and spine, causing a bowing shape and valve issues, severe palpitations, and a constant feeling of my heart beat. My lungs do not function at a healthy level, and Co2 is being trapped in the lower portion of my lungs. I get tired easily, and at times have difficulty breathing. Pressure is also being put on my esophogus, making it difficult for food to make it down in one swallow. The pain from all this pressure is intense, and at times almost unbearable.
For years I have struggled with these issues, and every doctor has turned me away, telling me it's just arthritis. I decided to take the matter in to my own hands and was able to see a pediatrician (although I was 25) and was connected with Dr. Jaroszewski at the Mayo Clinic in Pheonix, Arizona. Dr. J specializes in pectus excavatum corrective surgery (the nuss procedure). My case was labeled severe. Dr. J is only one of a few surgeons in the United States who specializes in this procedure. Bars are inserted under the ribcage and are flipped, forcing the sternum and ribs to be relocated (much like braces for teeth). The average procedure needs one bar, I will need three.

I am scheduled to have surgery, but am still battling with my insurance to cover the surgery. Some insurance companies still believe this to be only a cosmetic fix. Even with help from insurance, I would still be unable to afford the surgery. This issue will only get worse as I age.
I am asking and hoping for any help I can get. I can't tell you how much I appreciate any help that is given, even if it is just spreading awareness. Your donation will grant be the ability to live a life where I am not in constant pain and battling to breath. The donations will help cover my medical expenses, my plane flight for myself and my mother, and my hotel stay in Pheonix a week after surgery.
There is not enough "thank you"'s I could say for your help.
Blessed be.
