TM Wheelers Malin2Mizen 2023 Cycle
The Challenge
We are the “TM Wheelers” team of 4 men who will cycle from Malin to Mizen to raise vital money for our chosen charity Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Our main aim is to raise money for the charity but also to inspire hope, belief and motivation for people of all ages. As a bunch of normal middle aged men we hope to get our Dad bod’s in shape and have fun along the journey. We will also aim to show all our family and friends that anything is possible as we will endeavour to cycle the 640km from the top to toe of Ireland over the course of 4 days from the 14th September to 18th September 2023. Our total fundraising target is €12,000 and all funds raised here will go directly to this great cause.
The Cause
What is CF?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting more than 1,400 people in the Ireland. Those with CF are born with it and cannot catch it later in life, but one in 19 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without knowing.
CF causes a build-up of mucus in the lungs which incites chronic infections, meaning that people with cystic fibrosis struggle with reduced lung function and have to spend hours doing physiotherapy and taking nebulised treatments each day. Exacerbations (a sudden worsening of health, often owing to infection) can lead to frequent hospitalisation for weeks at a time, interfering with work and home life.
People with cystic fibrosis often require more than 50 tablets a day, plus a couple of hours of physiotherapy at home and some nebulised treatments. Low digestive efficiency can also mean more than 1,000 extra calories are required a day, which can be particularly challenging for children.
In short, there is no known cure for cystic fibrosis. There are a range of current treatments which improve the quality of life but we are yet to find a definitive solution to the condition. The predicted median age of survival for a person with CF in Ireland is 51.
Our chosen charity Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is a charity that raises money to support people with cystic fibrosis and their families in Ireland. The charity raises funds to support research into CF and new treatments, to provide information and support services to people with CF and their families such as counselling, exercise, transplant and fertility grants, and to campaign for better treatment and care for people with the disease amongst many other provisions.
The Crew
Ah, the cycling crew about to do Malin to Mizen, eh? Well, let us tell you a bit about ourselves, we are quite the bunch of characters!
This group of dedicated individuals is made up of James, Tom, Caoimhin and Stephen, each with our own unique talents and personalities. We have been training tirelessly for this challenge, pushing ourselves to the limit to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
James is the team jester, always cracking jokes and lifting everyone's spirits. Tom is the muscle of the group, but he's been so busy pumping iron that he's forgotten how to ride a bike altogether. Caoimhin is so focused on breaking his personal best time that he's been riding his bike in his sleep. And poor Stephen, well, he's just along for the ride, hoping that his training wheels don't slow the group down too much.
Together, the crew is ready to take on the open road, with all its twists and turns, and make it all the way from Malin to Mizen. It's already looking like its going to be a wild ride! We ask that you support us in any way you can, whether through a donation, words of encouragement, or simply sharing this journey with your network.
Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey!
Sincerely,
“TM Wheelers”
