** To address the urgent need for COVID-19 precautions in the Kyebando neighborhood of Uganda’s capital city Kampala, to.org will use all donations in April 2020 for rapid response entrepreneurial projects led by the Ghetto Rescue Team - a local youth task force within the You&I Foundation ecosystem that we have been supporting for the past two years.

Kyebando Needs:

Hand washing stations and soap - 100 wash stations in 7 zones

Masks - 2,000 cloth masks to help stop the spread

Public awareness - Ghetto Research Team will work primarily to create awareness and improve sanitation for the elderly and those living with long-term disability as a result of polio. Megaphones, music, and painted murals will communicate the Coronavirus threat and modes of transmission in Kampala’s slum neighborhoods such as Kyebando.

Uganda hosts more refugees than any other country in Africa and has the second youngest population in the world. With over 47% of the population under the age of 15, Uganda is home to a massive youth population that struggles to afford school or find work, vital creative young innovators with an abundance of ideas and a shortage of resources.

To.org has had a presence in Uganda for the last 2 years, where our Creative Activist team provides resources and training for young Ugandan and refugee entrepreneurs. Essentially, we fill the gaps, implementing projects in refugee settlements in northern and western Uganda and in impoverished slum areas of Kampala.

The way we do it is different to what you’ve seen before. With only 1% of traditional humanitarian relief funds reaching national or local organisations, the humanitarian system has created a culture of deep dependency and inefficiency. But 100% of funds raised by To.org go directly to supporting local organisations and people, split 50-50 between refugee and host communities.

Projects we have supported include a young female entrepreneur tackling period poverty by producing affordable reusable pads; ghetto youth installing and maintaining composting toilets in structures they’ve built using upcycled plastic bottle bricks; an activist architect building a toilet structure shaped like a rocket ship in the middle of a refugee camp; the provision of hundreds of mattresses to the reception centre at a refugee camp, so new arrivals can sleep comfortably and soundly in their newly safe environment; and a dedicated ghetto plastics team gathering discarded plastic bottles to upcycle for 3D printing, among other things, wind turbines that will one day provide clean energy.

This GoFundMe will support a variety of individuals and groups in refugee settlements and urban slums, innovative young entrepreneurs working tirelessly to benefit their communities in every way and to lift them out of poverty. Please join us in donating to these incredible, vital projects and the brilliant youth behind them.

Your donation is going to our local Uganda NGO partner, You & I Foundation (YAIF), directly through the to.org founder Nachson Mimran. We track all purchases to assure every dollar is used efficiently towards implementing these on the ground projects.
