To Repair my Home and Catamaran after Beryl Hurricane Damage
Donation protected
I'm David Cherry from Bournemouth, UK. I'm 62.
My home for the last 16 years, a 40' catamaran Puddytat, was badly damage by the horrific hurricane Beryl that passed directly over the boatyard in Carriacou, Grenada where I had her stored while I delivered a yacht to Europe for more cruising funds.
I have circumnavigated with her. She is beautifully designed by Lock Crowther and built by Catana in 1988. She is hull 11 .. the last of the original Catana 40's. I plan to continue sailing her.
The port hull is badly damaged with several tears through the hull side, two hatches smashed through, dismasted, rudders bent and broken, etc, etc.
In many ways the damage would right the boat off in insurance terms, but she could only be insured 3rd party due to the age of the boat. I desperately need funds to buy the materials to repair her and to pay the boatyard for storage ...... approximately £650 per month. Without the basic repairs to make her watertight and operational I can't get her out of the yard, with the consequence of the boatyard taking possession of her, and possibly destroying her.
I am especially suited to repair her as I am a professional chartered Naval Architect (CEng, MRINA, MImarEST). I am experienced with structural repairs of composite hulls. I am also a ship and yacht surveyor.
I can't do this alone, I need your help. I have never asked for help before. Carriacou hasn't been hit by a hurricane like Beryl before and my boat should have been safe. The risk was minimal ...l but I was unlucky.
If I can repair Puddytat, I'll be able to use my experience and skills to help the others to rebuild their lives.
