Toby Amputation and Chemo
Donation protected
On behalf of my girlfriend, Jennifer Bernard
My heart is breaking and I am honestly not okay at all. Toby jumped off the couch one night and started to limp. Our vet thought it was a sprain. After about a week it wasn't getting better and sometimes he was limping worse, so we went to an emergency vet last Tuesday evening.
There is bone loss in the shoulder area. They are almost certain it is cancer, the nasty osteosarcoma kind. He would not have long without treatment. He needs to have his leg amputated and will need follow up chemo. They said it will relieve a lot of his pain and give him another year to a year and a half. I can’t lose him yet. He is my best friend. He is the reason I fought so hard when I had GIST myself. Between what the GIST did to me and my other issues related to my NF1 I have lot of really rough days and he is always there for me, laying or sitting there with me when I don't feel well. I have to do everything I can for him.
His surgery is 12/23 and we will get to bring him home on Christmas Eve. After that he'll have chemo and we'll spoil him as much as possible for as long as he has left.
Update 12/21- The radiologist read Toby's scans and is almost certain it is osteosarcarma, which is the worst type of cancer it could be, but they said it was caught early and they didn't detect any spread outside of his leg, so we're hopeful that with chemo and immunotherapy he will get lots more good months, or even years.
