October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But here's the thing: awareness isn't enough.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally and the leading cause of cancer death for women aged 20-60. It's estimated over 300,000 Americans will be diagnosed this year and more than 42,000 will lose their fight.
Pictured is my mother, Debbie, who we tragically lost to advanced-stage metastatic breast cancer over 20 years ago when I was 9 years old.
She was just 43, a mother of three, and still missed by many.
Thanks to life-saving cancer research since she passed, local breast cancer now has nearly a 90% 5-year survival rate - if it's caught early.
But there's still A LOT of work to be done. Metastatic breast cancer has just a 31% survival rate.
In spirit of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in memory of Debbie, I had a fun idea to create a GoFundMe and invite my network to join me in donating to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which is consistently rated as one of the most respected charities for this cause. BCRF has an A+ rating from Charity Watch and 90% of funds raised go directly toward cancer research.
BCRF cancer research has been deeply involved with the doubling of metastatic breast cancer survival rates over the past 30 years, so every dollar makes a real impact for people diagnosed with breast cancer.
Aside from my own gift, my consultancy Sam Knight SEO will also match the first $1,000 raised
The GoFundMe is linked directly to BCRF and donations are still documented as a gift to a registered non-profit.
It's possible that one day no child loses their mom to breast cancer. Will you join me in the fight to see that day?
