Together for Jake: Help Us Reach Our Goal

Dear family, friends and community,

On February 10th Jake went to see his doctor as he had been struggling to breath, had purple dots appearing on his skin, was bruising easily and was having frequent nose bleeds. The doctor sent Jake for urgent blood work and the same day they called back to say that Jake's blood work was showing that there was a problem with his bone marrow. The family immediately headed to the Children's Hospital where he was admitted. Within 48 hours Jake underwent a bone marrow test, spinal fluid test and had multiple blood and platelet transfusions.

Jake would later be diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anemia which is a rare and serious blood disorder. It occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells.

On March 26th Jake started an immunosuppressive treatment with the end goal of having his body rebuild itself on its own. This treatment will take up to 6 months before we know if it will work.

Since Jake's initial stay at the hospital his life has drastically changed. Due to his high risk of infection Jake is not allowed to be around a lot of people, which means no going to school, playing hockey or being out in public spaces. Jake continues to go to Cancer Care two days a week to have his blood tested and receives blood and platelet transfusions as needed. These hospital visits can last up to seven hours each time.

Throughout it all we have witnessed Jake keep his head held high, he truly is a champion as he handles the highs and lows of the tests, the diagnosis and the treatment. His resilience and positive outlook to his life being turned upside down has been remarkable to watch.

We are raising funds to support the family during this time. Looking to help cover the costs of parking and food at the hospital, essential medications and to provide Jake with comfort items during his hospital stays. These items will help make his time in the hospital a bit more bearable and bring some much-needed joy during this difficult period.
