The Hem Sarita Pathak Foundation (HSPF) is a registered 501(c) 3 in the US and a registered NGO in Nepal. HSPF operates with the mission to reduce poverty and illiteracy in Nepal. With that goal, HSPF constructed a high school for the residents of Ghumarchowk in 2013. We envision a world in which all children have access to quality education and are given the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to their community, country and the world.

Summary

A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal near the capital city, Kathmandu. Immediate rescue efforts are underway but the estimated death toll of over 4,349 continues to rise. Aid groups are mobilizing to provide support and emergency supplies to the people impacted by the earthquake but the full extend of the damage is still unknown and is being assessed at this time.

What is the issue, problem, and challenge?

The earthquake between Kathmandu and Pokhara has caused extensive damage in Nepal. The country needs help responding to survivors' immediate needs such as food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. The Hem Sarita Pathak Foundation is asking for donations to fund such relief and recovery efforts for Ghumarchowk, an isolated village in Kathmandu. The Chairman of Ugratara School, Hitman Tamang reported that 300 out of the 400 something house in Ghumarchowk have collapsed. He also reported six deaths, which included a mother and a newly born child and many severe injuries. The elderly and the children are affected the most by this disaster. "We need support from the various international agencies which are more knowledgeable and equipped to handle the kind of emergency we face now," said Information Minister of Nepal, Minendra Rijal. One of the issues at hand is to figure out how to deliver aide to rural areas, such as Ghumarchowk, due to their complex geographical locaitons and the lack of transportation in such areas. Another problem that has exacerbated the impact on the residents and the community in Ghumarchowk are landslides due to the rain, which followed the massive earthquake.

How will your donations solve this problem?

All donations to this fund will DIRECTLY support earthquake recovery and relief efforts in Ghumarchowk. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, the REMAINDER of this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run by the Hem Sarita Pathak Foundation (HSPF) with the help of our volunteer Tiffany Tran (volunteer from America), Sandhya Sitaula (oversees HSPF’s operations in Nepal) and Hitman Tamang (the Chairman of Ugratara School in Ghumarchowk).

Potential Long Term Impact

We believe that the organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are often in the best position to provide long-term support for disaster victims. Donations to this fund will DIRECTLY assist families that have been deeply affected by the earthquake. The Hem Sarita Pathak Foundation will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.
