Tom Van Scyoc's Medical Fund
Donation protected
Tom Van Scyoc entered the hospital on July 13th for an allogenic stem cell transplant using his son’s cells as his donor. Though the transplant itself went as expected, complications from a virus and a bacterial infection took an extreme toll on Tom’s kidneys and lungs. His kidneys recovered. However, his lungs are still presenting a bit of a challenge.
As of September 19, 2017, Tom has been at CMC Main in Charlotte for over nine weeks and four of those weeks have been in ICU. Within 36 hours in ICU, Tom was put on a ventilator with vent tubing in his mouth for two weeks and was then transitioned to a tracheostomy tube. Debbie, his wife, has taken a leave of absence from her employment at Gaston College to be by her husband’s side.
As you might guess, many expenses come from such a lengthy hospital stay, some of which are obvious like gas and food. Tom is currently waiting on his long term disability to be processed. Many have asked how they can help. This page is set up to assist Tom and Debbie with those expenses.
