To those wanting to help Tom Klassen,
We are writing to you on his behalf to bring you up to speed, as life has not gone well for Tom this last year. Tom is a very special person who has a big heart, and cares a lot about people. Tom has often sacrificed himself to help others, even at his own expense.
Currently, daily life has become very difficult for him and he needs help. His current situation is such that Tom needs assistance in many ways. It’s a long story, but we will do our best to keep it to the most important details. For those that don’t know, last fall, Tom had a stroke followed by surgery for a brain aneurism.
Leading up to these events, we had been trying to help get his talent management company back on track so Tom could have money to retire. However, Tom was in a serious car accident up north that badly shook him up. A bear ran into his car on a country road. Shortly after, he had a serious fall as well and we later found out, he had broken his hip. He struggled for over a year with this. In 2015, Tom had to have a hip replacement surgery.
Then came the final issue that has impacted Tom’s health and well-being the greatest. While in recovery from the surgery Tom suffered a stroke due to a blood clot associated with the hip replacement surgery. Subsequently, he had to undergo brain surgery to correct a developing brain aneurysm they found in the process of scanning for the stroke. Ironically, the stroke saved his life, but Tom lost his ability to form sentences (aphasia) for the next three months and his memory was very spotty. Since his general medical condition was precarious, he needed full time professional help and therapy at a facility while he recovered for 3 months.
There have been some issues coordinating with Medi-Cal (medicaid) and simultaneously with UCLA, to get someone to cover a recovery facility for Tom as there was no one to aid him in this endeavor. Finally, after over a week of negotiation and tactical planning, UCLA agreed to pay out of their own pocket for a board and care facility. Tom powered through and recovered, learning to speak again and handle general day to day skills. We got him home despite all the odds against him. Tom did recover and worked hard on doing his occupational and speech therapy.
His situation is not as extreme as needing a nursing home, but he has limitations as you can see. He is 78, a stroke and brain aneurysm survivor, and has been given a second chance in a lot of ways. Hopefully we can find some solutions to help him get back on his feet and make the most of this second chance.
He is currently back in the hospital recovering from some complications from the stroke and medications, but they seem to have solved the problem now and he is getting better. They are saying he will make progress in his recovery. So we are hopeful. Thanks for your time for reading this. His funds are depleted and he needs our financial aid to help with solutions moving forward. We are hoping to find an assisted living place for him. We appreciate any helping hand you can give.
Many thanks,
Friends of Tom Klassen
