In memory of Tom Murphy

My name is Gloria Commiso and I was a friend of Toms. I volunteered to help Tamria during this difficult and stresssfull time period.
Its with a heavy heart that I write this on behalf of the family of Tom Murphy. Tom passed away of a heart attack on 2/17/16. Many of you know Tom because he was a person who was always on the go, drving, taking care of his son, hanging out with friends at Peets coffee and other Redondo Beach local establishments.
You may have heard Tom telling a story or joke over drinks or dinner. He was a great storyteller and often recapped Seinfeld episodes. Even with his own trials and tribulations he tried his best to make others laugh.
Tom grew in Manhattan, New York and served in the Vietnam war. He relocated to California and fell in love with Redondo Beach. He and Tamria met on a blind date and it was an instant connection. That meeting resulted in a marraige and eventually the birth of their son Sean, who is now 14 years old.
Although Tom and Tamria were no longer married, they put there differences aside in order to love and support their son.
Toms was a chaffeur and often made instant friends with the people that he would drive home or to and from partys. He had a way of always making people feel comfortable. Although he had various interests, his favorite topic of conversation was his son.
He was the ultimate proud father and called Sean his best friend. He would often tell stories about hs sons academic and athletic success. Sean played soccer, baseball and most recently wanted to try sailing
When Tom found out his son was accepted to POLA (Port of Los Angeles High School) , he acted like he had hit the lottery! His excitement was tempered by the fact that he had to drive Sean back and forth from Redondo Beach to San Pedro every morning and afternoon. But this was a labor of love because Tom lived for his son. Not suprising that Tom would become one of the first PTA dads at POLA and be active in the school community.
Unfortunateley , Tom didn’t make provisions for his son in the event of his death. We are asking for donations in lieu of flowers or gifts. The funds raised will be used for Seans school expenses and college fund.
Please share this link with friends that may have known Tom or anyone with a generous heart that can contribute to Seans future.
Thank you in advance for your generousity. Your contributions will mean so much for Tamria but mostly Sean academic future as he adjust to life without his fathers love and support.
Looking forward to seeing you at Tom's celebration of life on March 13th from 12 noon unitl 4pm at "Ave A Sports Bar", 800 S. Pacific Coast Highway Redondo Beach. Tamria requests that you wear a Rolling Stones tshirt in honor of Toms favorite band.
