Tommy Gibson: Overcoming a Life-Altering Injury

Spending time with family and friends was a common occurrence in the Gibson household. Enjoying the summer with lots of laughter, food, comradery and taking a dip in the pool were all the things Tommy looked forward to. However, on this hot summer day something unimaginable happened that would change the course of his life.

Tommy, a former Division 1 baseball player, someone who has been immersed in sports since childhood, and now a dedicated baseball coach, was in the best physical shape of his life. He makes it a point to work out every day, maintaining both his passion for fitness and his commitment to a healthy lifestyle. It was almost inconceivable that such a severe injury would befall him while engaging in a common, everyday activity.

On this August afternoon, Tommy dove into the pool. Nothing unusual, nothing outlandish, it is something he has done numerous times. Just a simple dive. However, this time a severe accident occurred. Tommy suffered a C-6 Spinal Cord injury. He has been in the hospital’s Trauma ICU department for over a month, making slow but steady progress. The goal at hand is simply to be able to breathe on his own again, but that is not all he is faced with. His journey also involves the hurdles of limited arm function and slowly regaining sensation/full mobility in his hands and legs.

We understand that the road ahead may present challenges, but Tommy's determination, along with the unwavering support of his parents, family and friends will guide him successfully along the way. Tommy's close friends have decided to set up this GoFundMe Page, in hopes to provide Tommy with some financial relief during this arduous and challenging time.

The road ahead for recovery and rehabilitation will undoubtedly be costly. Tommy will undergo several months of rehabilitation. The funds will ensure he receives the essential services, medical supplies and transportation which could last up to a year or more based on his progress. This will enable him to continue his dedicated efforts toward regaining his mobility, his independence and getting back up on his feet. Your donations will also assist us in adapting Tommy's living space to accommodate his specific needs/requirements. Specialized equipment for sitting and sleeping will be necessary.
