Toni Hunt is a Brisbane Broncos NRLW player and a mother of three beautiful children who has just been diagnosed with metastatic cholangiocarcinoma.
The 35 year old was first diagnosed with stage four cancer in March of 2022.
After getting the all clear to play NRLW this season and playing three games for the Broncos, she received the news in mid August of 2023, that it had returned.
A routine three-month scan picked up spots in her lymph nodes and it was recommended she start chemotherapy, which meant giving up her rugby league career again after fighting so hard to get it back.
She bravely soldered on, while continuing to go to Broncos training and not letting her teammates know what she was going through until recently, when they were informed she had to withdraw from the team to focus on her health.
The news has devastated her Broncos teammates.
Toni had only returned to play NRLW for the Broncos this season after undergoing 12 rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and the removal of her gallbladder, half of her liver and two lymph nodes.
She is hopeful that after the latest rounds of treatment, she will be well enough to enjoy Christmas with her family, and she hasn't given up hope of being able to play rugby league again in the future.
However, she has a battle on her hands as she fights for her life, all while staying positive for her family.
It's been a huge shock for her fiance Tahu and their three children Corden, 15, Kaiya, 13 and Jai, 8.
Juggling the children with undergoing chemotherapy while Tahu works 12 hour days is a huge task for Toni, who would ideally love to have her partner alongside her while she's sick and caring for the family.
It's taken time for her to accept she may need financial help, but with the encouragement of the Broncos she’s come to realise she will need donations to maintain her quality of life for herself and her family for the foreseeable future.
Toni has felt as though she's failed to beat the cancer, but she's an inspiration to anyone who meets her and she continues to face this horrible disease with the same attitude she brings to life and rugby league -- never give up.
