We just received word from one of our athletes who is close to Toni’s family that the funeral on Saturday is for family and close family friends only. We just wanted to get the word passed along that we will all just be going to the services tonight.

UPDATE#2: We are also hoping to establish a scholarship with the UMass Lowell's Track & Field program in Toni's name for student-athlete leaders who embody the life and legacy of Toni.

Any additional donations from this campaign will be deposited in the scholarship fund. More info will come in the following weeks ahead.

UPDATE #1: Thank you for your contributions in helping us achieve our initial fundraising goal of $9,000 to pay for Toni's funeral. It really says a lot about the type of person he was and the friendship bonds he created.

We are in the process of contacting Toni's family to begin transferring over the funds and learn about any additional expenses they may have.

The fundraising page will continue to be active.

Additional details will be posted once we gather more information from the family.

Oluwatoni Onikeku - known by most friends as simply "Toni"  - was a Fitchburg, Mass. resident who came to the US with his family from Lagos, Nigeria in 2002. He graduated from Fitchurgh High School in 2012 and was an upcoming senior Political Science major at UMass Lowell, expected to graduate in May 2016.

On Sunday 13, 2015, Toni drowned while swimming with friends in the Deerfield River in Deerfield, Mass.

Toni is described as well liked by many family friends and teammates, an outstanding athlete, strong student, an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and a very involved member of the UMass Lowell community.

Toni's family is seeking support in helping pay for funeral arrangements, which are estimated to be approximately $9,000.

Updates on the wake and memorial services will be provided once they become available.
