The BARE 1000 - Tony Riddle runs the SW Coast Path
Donation protected
This month I’m embarking on my biggest extreme endurance event yet and I need your support!
On 15 September I’ll be hitting the South West Coast Path from Somerset to complete the whole 1000km of epic coastline in just ten days, to beat the current running record of 10 days, 8 hours and 24 minutes.
The South West Coast Path is Britain's longest, most challenging national trail, I’ll be traversing over 115,000ft of ascents and descents - think scaling Mt Everest four times! It’s going to be a huge challenge of mind, body and spirit.
With thanks to support from VIVOBAREFOOT, I’ll be wearing an incredible piece of tech- scan-to-print 3D footwear that mimics my own barefoot condition and the incredible gear I was born with (my feet!).
By enduring such a long distance in minimal footwear, I hope to encourage others to see a barefoot lifestyle as a way of unlocking their natural human potential.
Please support my mission to raise awareness and funds for three climate-related projects I’m personally passionate about:
1. The restoration of the South West Coast Path which is under threat from coastal erosion as a result of climate change. In the next 20 years parts of the South West Coast Path could be unrecognisable due to the effects of climate change. The world in which the Coast Path was first designated as a National Trail no longer exists - there has been a 41% decrease in UK species abundance since the 1970s[1]. The South West Coast Path Association does important work to restore the path, ensuring future generations can enjoy it. Learn why the SWCP is worth protecting
2. My friends at Earthrise Studios are producing an important film telling the story of the pioneering indigenous leader Sônja Guajajara. 'Dreams of Sônia’ follows Sônia’s unprecedented election campaign for Federal Congresswoman. With the Amazon close to ‘tipping point’ and rates of deforestation breaking record after record, the stakes couldn't be higher. The future of Indigenous peoples, the Amazon - and the entire planet - hangs in the balance. They urgently need to raise funds to complete the film.
3. And finally, I’ll be supporting the The Ju/'hoan San people in Namibia, cobblers who created the “san-dal” for long-distance running to hunt animals over hot sand - a necessary tool for our common ancestors’ survival. Via The Future Footwear Foundation and Vivobarefoot we are raising funds for a community building and research hub to ensure their ancient knowledge is not lost. Learn more about their original hunting sandals here.
