Tools for Schools in Dobromyl

Donation protected

When the Nazis arrived in my father's town in 1941, they built--using slave labor--a private sidewalk next to a house appropriated by the Gestapo.

The sidewalk was constructed from gravestones taken from the Jewish cemetery.

Over 70 years later, I was grateful to be a small part of a dedicated team of people who worked to move the gravestones back to the empty hill where the cemetery once stood.

With the encouragement and support of Mr. Yurij Petryk, the honorable mayor of the town, a "Wall of Memory" was built--made from the broken gravestones.

                                                   ----------

Dobromyl is a small town of 5000 people.

My father was born in 1921. His house is still standing in Dobromyl. This photo was taken a few months ago.

When I was in Dobromyl, I could not help but notice there is no playground. Nor are there playgrounds in any of the nearby villages.

I recently met with Dobromyl’s  Mayor Petryk along with several members of the Dobromyl town council. I asked the mayor if I could sponsor a playground in Dobromyl in my father's memory.

We agreed on a plan.

I paid for the playground.

And it is being built right now--next to Town Hall.

It will be ready in the Spring, 2017.

BUT...

Like so many towns and villages in Ukraine, Dobromyl could use our help.

There are many needs in Ukraine.

My focus is helping the children.

From the outside, the school building in Dobromyl looks just like a school building.

On the inside, there are over 400 beautiful children and eager teachers.

                            But something is missing!

They do not have the essential tools needed by teachers and students today.

* One teacher told me a dream: one day she will have a simple projector so that all of her students can see the information at the same time.

* Another teacher said the school does not have a globe with current countries represented—including their own, Ukraine.

I promised these teachers I would buy them a projector and a globe. And I did!

When I returned to my home in New York I shared my experience with my brother—a lifelong educator and activist—and he said, “What can I purchase for them?”

I shared my experience with a few friends  and they wanted to participate as well!

So, here I am at GoFundMe asking you to consider helping too.

Providing the money for the playground was a great joy for me.

Would you help me buy some of the other things the community and the school in Dobromyl need?

HERE'S HOW I SEE IT:

Had history been different, the children of Dobromyl could have been my neighbors.

I have gotten know these children, and I love them.

“Love thy neighbor” is a core principle of every spiritual tradition.

It is a small world.

All the children of the world are our neighbors.

Please join me in helping the students and the teachers and the future of my father's town of Dobromyl, Ukraine.
