Toowa Girls Group
My granny Kath Houghton has been doing incredible things for the community of Toowa in Uganda, Africa for the last few years.
Kath and her group of dedicated friends, volunteers and donors now have secured sponsorship of 70 children, built a school and necessary facilities for the people of Toowa. These children now have access to education and healthcare. Kath has been out to visit the village and seen first hand the improvements in quality of life this amazing work has done for the people of Toowa. More recently, I have learned about the period poverty which many of the girls and women in Toowa experience. Many girls have to miss school for days at a time each month when their period arrives. This is because the girls didn’t have access to sanitary items until Kath, Jeanette, Hannah and the team set up the Girls Group at the Toowa school. Jeanette and Hannah have recently provided a package of sanitary pads, pants and wash clothes to the girls group.
Learning of this has sparked a motivation in me to help provide for the Toowa Girls Group to ensure better period care so no girls have to miss school because of their body’s natural cycle. By providing sustainable sanitary products and educating about women’s reproductive systems and care, this will also help improve female hygiene, reduce occurrence of urinary tract infections and improve sexual health awareness.
I would like to raise money to purchase menstrual cups and menstrual pants to supply to the girls and women of Toowa. Menstrual cups are sustainable products which can last a girl for years, reducing waste and damage to the environment compared to traditional single use sanitary items. Menstrual pants are an option more suitable for the younger girls. I would also like to ensure the girls are taught about good feminine hygiene and sexual health.
I have set up a GoFundMe page with a target of $500 to go towards the cost of menstrual cups, pants, underwear and postage to get the items to Uganda. Any size of donation would be so greatly appreciated.
Alternatively, if you would like to donate any new & unused girls underwear, wash cloths and bras, please contact me.
If you are interested in sponsoring a child from Toowa, please let me know. For £15 (~$30 AUD) a month, this donation covers the cost of schooling, healthcare and a better quality of life for a child and their family. You can also be invited to join Facebook and WhatsApp groups to receive regular updates from Toowa and keep up to date with the amazing developments that are happening for this community ❤️
