TORTUGA GALLERY CELEBRATES ALBUQUERQUE'S BOSQUE WITH A MURAL

In collaboration with Mural Fest 2018 and Tortuga Gallery, three local artists have designed a nearly 25' x 90' mural, celebrating the flora and fauna of Albuquerque’s Rio Grande Bosque. The mural will wrap around the gallery's home at 901 Edith SE during Mural Fest 2018 starting at the end of September. This ambitious project kicks off on July 6 with a fundraiser previewing the mural design in which participating artists Denise Weaver Ross, Joel Davis, and Roe LiBretto will exhibit their individual works.

Funding for this project includes sponsorship opportunities and a raffle of the mural artists' work. The raffle will begin at the July 6 exhibition and end at the July 21 Artful Saturday event featuring art, food, and local music. Go to www.tortugagallery.org to buy raffle tickets for the artists' work. Mural Fest 2018 has worked with Tortuga and the artists to launch this Go Fund Me campaign. 15% of the money raised during the Go Fund Me campaign will go to Sierra Club’s Bosque Action Team, the rest will go to pay the Mural Team before the painting begins on Sept. 22.

ABOUT THE MURAL TEAM

Denise Weaver Ross  is the lead artist and project manager. She has completed two previous murals: Garden of the Muses located in The Source’s Community Garden on Carlisle SE, and We the People on Tapia Road in the South Valley. In 2017 she featured as the poster artist for ¡Globalquerque!’s world music festival. Weaver Ross is well known for her House of Cards series of 56 large-scale, and in the past five years she has exhibited in national juried exhibitions in Attleboro, MA; Las Vegas, NV; Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Her work can be seen regularly at Ghostwolf Gallery in Old Town, and has a one-person show scheduled for October at Tortuga Gallery.

Joel Davis  is a sculptor and mosaic artist who has worked with various artists providing installation support at Meow Wolf, was celebrated as an emerging artist at Harwood’s 2016 Surface exhibition, and currently exhibits at Relic Gallery in downtown Albuquerque. He has shown work in Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Oakland Denver, and Santa Fe. His mosaic tile can be seen locally at the Guild Cinema and the Remedy Day Spa. He will provide important mosaic elements to the mural.

Roe LiBretto  is contributing rendering expertise and organizational abilities to her first mural project. She studied drawing, painting, and design at the Brooklyn Museum, the School of Visual Arts, and City College of New York. Roe has exhibited in juried gallery shows in Longmont, CO; New York City; Paris, France; Brooklyn, NY, and Pittsfield, MA, and received commissions from the New York City Cultural Council and the Massachusetts State Council on the Arts. Locally she has shown in many venues, including the KD Neeley Gallery and Tortuga Gallery, Her work can be found regularly at the Ghostwolf Gallery in Old Town.

Pax Garcia and Jill Logan are the co-directors of the Tortuga Gallery.  Tortuga is housed in a building that dates to the 1880s when the railroad came through Albuquerque. From the beginning, the mission of Tortuga Gallery has been to support artists, musicians, poets, writers, teachers and the local community as a gathering space for creative expression. The Mural Fest 2018 theme of “Nature Calls” is a reflection of what Tortuga is all about. It feels like a natural next step for the space, bringing together artists and collaborating on ideas that truly express the theme aligns with the ideals of Tortuga. See tortugagallery.org for more information.

This year's theme When Nature Calls brings focus to Planet Earth’s climate crisis and how it is effecting all life on this floating rock we call home.  From California being on fire to Houston & Puerto Rico being under water to New Mexico facing one of the worst droughts in history—we felt a need to bring our world community together through murals, music and culinary arts to highlight solutions we can all play a part in moving forward.
