Tour de France Phuket Charity 2021
Donation protected
Setup on behalf of my brother, John Bennett "Coach JJ" who lives and works in Phuket, Thailand:
The craziest hardest challenge of my life riding the Tour De France for ‘One Phuket’, poverty charity At 57 years old I will ride the Tour De France distance for charity, around Phuket; raising funds for poverty in Phuket, particularly the poverty children.
I will have to ride 3417km in 19 days, the same distance as the pros, each day, the longest stage is 249km!
It’s heart breaking to see over 200,000 unemployed and the poverty wage for many Phuketians is at a crazy low 1,900 Bahts /$60 a MONTH, yes per month! I am teaming up with ‘One Phuket’ charity run by Thais and Expats, started by Andrea Edwards, who has a full team of volunteers getting provisions out to the needy It’s all nationalities that are suffering; Thais, Myanmar, expats from multiple countries.
Some people have lost their life savings and investments as their businesses have remained closed for 18 months. The suicide rate is at an all-time high and so many are incredibly depressed.
Phuket relies 89% on income from tourism, of which there has hardly been any for 18 months. It is incredibly sad looking at Phuketians selling anything they have just to survive, I have seen people selling their saucepans for 100bahts ($3), just to be able to buy some food to eat.
There is light at the end of the tunnel as hopefully Phuket will reopen at some point soon, but we are in desperate need of donations to help keep families fed and watered for the next 6 months.
Many of you will have been to Thailand and Phuket, if we can just get 1000 people to donate £/$10 each that will help feed and support an incredible amount of poverty families. I am willing to give up 3 weeks of my time to ride 3417km in monsoon rains, 35 degrees and 90% humidity.
All I want out of this is to raise awareness and donations to help. Every single $/£ will go to the charity.
We already have several cycling brands supporting me:- Chapter2 frames, Garmin, Pearl wheels, Vittoria tyres, Bioracer. I
