Help For Helen

Donation protected
On July 15th Helen McCarthy, owner of KitCoffee Peterborough had an accident on a friend's dock, resulting in both of her ankles being severely broken, each requiring emergency surgery. This devastating event will leave Helen reliant on a wheel-chair for mobility for upwards of three months as she heals.

Helen is a beloved member of the Peterborough community and a loving mother to her beautiful three-year-old daughter Maggie who will be under the care of her co-parents during this difficult time. This tragic incident comes after a previous emergency medical leave where Helen suffered a broken left leg in January.

Helen has been successfully managing two locations of KitCoffee despite the difficult circumstances that Covid-19 has created for the local small business community.

This new personal crisis is physically, emotionally and financially devastating.

Helen is a strong, independent and positive force in this community, always willing to lend a helping hand to someone in need. Her cafe is a community hub, supporting local farmers, producers and makers with diverse retail offerings from many other small businesses. Helen has used her place of privilege as a downtown business owner to support both BLM and the Nogojiiwaanong Friendship Centre in recent months through personal campaigns. This community advocacy reflects a deep commitment to uplifting folks in need.

While we may not be able to mend Helen's physical ailments, we want to ensure she is held by this community during such a difficult time, so that she can spend the time she needs to heal.

We are seeking community support to raise money for two specific things:
1. to help pay for wages to keep both KitCoffee locations open full hours while Helen cannot work herself, and
2. to help install a wheelchair accessible washroom and other necessary mobility adaptations to Helen's home - the full cost of which will be disclosed as renovations proceed.

Further physical therapy and home healthcare support may come with additional unexpected financial costs.

We will be sure to update the gofundme with a break down of financial allocation in the coming weeks.

The Peterborough community is in awe of Helen's tenacity, and grateful for her presence in the downtown core.

Please consider donating to help Helen if you have the financial ability to do so, by supporting her businesses directly, or through this page, during this incredibly difficult time.
