Twin Ports Pet Safe Housing

Tax deductible
When a survivor of domestic abuse seeks shelter, there are many factors the survivor must address. A survivor might be economically dependent on the abuser, lack emotional support, or fear physical harm to self, children, and pets. While most shelters invite children, few can allow companion animals. Furthermore, many survivors working with a domestic abuse program choose to stay with family and friends who may not be able to accomodate pets.

As a result, many survivors are either forced to abandon their beloved pet with the abuser, or quickly surrender the pet into an animal shelter. Both options increase the stress of an already-traumatic situation and leave the survivor feeling regretful for years to come.

The Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse (CASDA) and an established local animal shelter, which will remain anonymous for survivor safety, recognized this critical problem and partnered together to eliminate it. The result is the Twin Ports Pet Safe Housing program.

This program allows CASDA to offer a temporary foster home service for animals escaping domestic abuse with their families. While survivors take the necessary time to settle into their new lives, their pets will be cared for by safe and loving foster families.

Foster family services are generously volunteered; however, providing veterinary care, transportation, food, and supplies can easily reach upwards of $500 per pet. Additionally, it is critical for us to be prepared for any emergency situation we might encounter with these pets.

Our goal is only attainable with the support of our wonderful community. With your help, this program will ease the minds of many deserving families. The earlier we reach our goal, the sooner we can offer this program to our neighbors.
