Hollie's #metoo Expenses

My name is Hollie.

Thank you for reading my story.

I was born and raised in Dallas Texas and I am the mom to three amazing kids.

On February 6th I was violently assaulted and raped while on a date with a man I met online.  After assaulting me he threw me down a flight of stairs and left me for dead.  I laid in a pool of blood for over half an hour.  By the Grace of God someone found me and called 911.

I don't remember much after that.  I was in the hospital for a week fairly out of it on morphine.

At the time of the assault I had no insurance.  As a self-employed person I have to obtain insurance through the Healthcare Marketplace (Obamacare).  I provide insurance for both myself and my kids.  I share 50/50 custody with my ex-husband and receive no support.

Gratefully open enrollment for coverage was extended due to COVID and I was able to obtain insurance that began March 1st.  It is the best available plan through the Healthcare Exchange.  It is costly and the coverage is not as good as it would be through a company or private plan.

Both of my jaws are broken in several places.  I have missing teeth, fractures in both eye sockets and several fractures in my skull.   I have bruises all over my body.  Sprains to my left wrist and right ankle

The most damage was to my jaws and teeth.  While I have significant hemorrhages in my eyes the ophthalmologist reported no damage to the retinas.

I have been blessed to find an amazing group of incredibly compassionate doctors.

I first met with a prosthodontist.  He acts as the quarterback coordinating my care.   A wonderfully compassionate doctor and assistant.

The prosthodontist referred me to one of the top (if not the top) maxillofacial surgeons in the country.  The surgeon happens to office at Baylor Dallas.  People come from all over the world to see him.  His wife runs his office.  They graciously opened some time over the last few weeks to see me and determine the best course of action moving forward.  It is an unbelievable blessing to have this doctor in my corner.

Both doctors referred me to an orthodontist and periodontist.  And all four doctors came together (with me) to consult about my case on a Monday evening.  Definitely eating into their family time.  I am grateful beyond words

I need to have jaw surgery immediately.    The ER doc did a great injustice when operating on me on the night of the assault.

I will need braces for a few months.  An then I will need several crowns, temporary bridges and dental implants to get back to any resemblance of my original smile.  The team of doctors estimate at least 9-12 months to get back to any sense of "normal".

My new insurance, thankfully, offers some out-of -network benefits.  None of the doctors are in network ( or even accept insurance).  And while all of them have significantly discounted their fees the out of pocket expenses will be high.

The maxillofacial surgeon completed the surgery on March 12.   The out of pocket cost for that surgery alone is $48,000

I have over $300,000 in unpaid hospital bills.   A conservative estimate for the remaining dental work is over $75,000.

I am without words for the kindness, compassion and help that I have received since the assault.  The outpouring of love is beyond words.  I break into tears because I am overwhelmed with gratitude and humility.  There is no way I can ever repay this debt.

Again, thank you for reading my story.  If you find it in your heart to contribute you have my most sincere gratitude.  If you are not in a position to help I hope you will pay it forward to someone with an outpouring of compassion and kindness.

With gratitude, hk
