Trafford's Vet Bills

Donation protected
We said goodbye to our vibrant character of a dog Trafford after an extremely intense week-long battle against a series of barely-understood physical failings.  Initially we thought it was related to some sort of bowel disease, then it was Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, in which Trafford's immune system attacked his own red blood cells.    In the end no one is quite sure what happened or why things ended so painfully.

Trafford spent 3 days at a specialty clinic fighting for his life.  He had the best of care and the blood transfusions seemed to be working.  He came home and seemed to be getting better...until he wasn't.  The light went out of his eyes and the life drained from his already strained body.  We rushed him back to the clinic for another night of immediate care and last-ditch efforts.   We lost the battle.

We were able to be there with him at the end.  His poor body - 130 huggable pounds  - was covered in tubes, stitches, bandages...his plume of a tail was shaved to the skin.  He was so sad, so sick, but he recognized us and crawled over to us to lay his head near us as if saying goodbye.  It's hard to know if he was comforting us or we were comforting him.

Trafford was a special dog.   He was so eager to be one of us, to be part of our lives.  His heart was enormous (his brains..not so much!) and all he wanted was to help us.  Making the bed?  Let me help!  Cooking in the kitchen?  I can help!  Vacuuming, dusting, sweeping?  Oh, I can definitely be helpful there...The dude was in the way all of the time in his efforts to be near us, to see what we were doing, to be part of things.

Trafford was kind.  He had friends of all species.  He loved to catch his ball (but not bring it back - after all he was a shepherd, not a retriever!) and his favorite party trick was to appear behind someone - preferably a total stranger -  and pop his head out between their legs with a big goofy grin on his face.  He was generous and gentle with young 'uns and enthusiastic with grown-ups.

The purpose of this campaign is not to cover all of his expenses, which total $14,000.  We just need help with the final portion.  That last night in the hospital we had signed paperwork with an upper-end estimate of about $3500.  We were ok with that if it meant our buddy's life.   When the vet called us at 2:30 AM to give a status report I must've agreed to something without fully understanding what it was.  The final bill for those last hours was $8,000.

This amount of debt on a credit card is brutal.  We already live paycheck to paycheck and making even the minimum payments is a challenge.

Any funds brought in by this campaign will go directly to Trafford's final hospital bill.

We wish you could have known our sweet funny boy.  We wish you could have seen his tongue flap around with a life of its own, or heard him grunt gleefully when he found just the right spot to roll around in.  We wish he was still here with us, always.

Thank you.   Thank you so much.
