Train Edmund to be a Psychiatric Service Dog
Donation protected
Hi this is Laura! My family and I haven’t shared much the last year and half about what has been happening medically, however as I am getting ready to leave for school this fall we are looking for ways to ensure my safety and independence.
In December of 2021 I had my first seizure. During the episode, which began on stage during a choir concert, I became disoriented and walked off stage. When my mom found me, around 20 minutes later, I didn’t know where I was, who she was, or what my name was. This began a series of hospital visits, doctors offices, and eventually a diagnosis.
In August of 2022, I was diagnosed with PNES, psychogenic non-epileptic seizures. A disorder that I will most likely have for the rest of my life. These seizures last anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours, and range from 1 to 5 a day. As we continue to work on various medical treatments and therapies, it has been recommended that a psychiatric service dog to accompany me in public and during seizures would be helpful.
We got Edmund from a shelter in the summer of 2021, thinking we were rescuing him. When my seizures started he was quick to find ways to protect me. Currently he will stay with me if I am wandering or confused, provide pressure to calm me, and alerts others to seizures when I need help. In order for me to gain additional independence, and with the approval of my medical team, I plan to attend school this fall. To come with me Edmund needs official service dog training. There is a local company in Kansas City who has evaluated Edmund and believes he would do well, and can be trained to provide further support for my condition.
In order to pay for his training, I need to raise $4,500. Anything additional will go to pay for Edmunds care while I am in school this coming year.
Thank you for your help and your prayers!
