Spencer Larimore and Rusty
Spencer is a quadriplegic who adopted Rusty, an Australian shepherd, red healer & Airedale mix, known as an Idaho Shag over 2 years ago. Spencer an avid bicycler of the Boise foothills wanted a dog who could come with him. After a few years of observation and research he decided a herding type dog would best fit his lifestyle. Spencer's mom found this little Idaho Shag on Craigslist and it was love at first site, taking him on his first 10 mile bike ride the very next morning. Rusty now 3 yrs old has put down hundreds of miles with his partner.
But a behavioral problem has come to a head.
The unpredictable behavior started after Rusty was fixed approximately a year & half ago. No one can groom him without retaliation. The behavior of biting has climaxed recently with Spencer putting the leash on. Rusty bit him due to his skin accidently being pinched. Being disabled, Spencer is not able to correct this escalating behavior. Spencer thought his only solution at the time is to rehome Rusty because he could not afford the specialized dog training necessary.
Rusty needs professional dog training!
To accomplish this goal we are asking for your help!
Training for Rusty will cost approximately $3,500 which on a fixed income is not possible but...YOU can help, even if it's only $5!
It is worth a shot to;
-help correct the behavior
-keep Spencer and Rusty together
-and to give back to another during these trying times
Spencer and Rusty deserve this opportunity to see if they can remain together. Rusty, the new kitty, and Spencer have been the best of friends especially since social isolation is practiced during this time.
Rusty is a constant companion riding everywhere with Spencer!
Brittany Balland of Outset Canine Training met with Spencer and Rusty for an assessment.
"Rusty is a wonderful dog. He is a happy, friendly, excitable roughly 3 year old Idaho Shag. While he is a loving dog, he has unfortunately developed trust issues due to a series of unfortunate accidents. Now Rusty has concerning insecurities that revolve around physical contact. Grooming him, petting him at the wrong time or even simply putting a leash on are becoming an extraordinary challenge. These concerns are affecting Rusty's day to day life as he can no longer be exercised nor taken care of quite the same as before. Rusty is also a health risk to his owner, Spencer, who is a quadriplegic."

My connection with Spencer and Rusty
Ada Blaine is my Idaho Shag of which Rusty was the sire. Spencer's sister Alyssa owns the dam, Annie. Alyssa and I have known each for years through our love of horses. When I saw their puppies, I too fell in love with this special made-up breed! So you see, we are all connected...through the love of our furry family members.
