Trans Artist Relocating from Florida

Hi there! My name is Neal. I have called Orlando, Florida home for over half my life. While I hadn't intended to remain here forever, I was in no rush to leave. That has changed over the past few years as the state has grown increasingly hostile towards trans existence. Even within the relatively safe confines of Orlando, I cannot escape the grip of this violent fascism.

My situation is not dire nor is my life in immediate danger. I am among the fortunate minority who was able to keep uninterrupted access to my affirming HRT treatment. That said, I am working to be relocated from Florida by this time next year. With the upcoming presidential election on top of being in one of the most unsafe states for trans people, I have decided to relocate before the situation BECOMES dire.

For those that have been following along, you may have seen that there are currently several "do not travel" advisories regarding Florida. These calls come from activist groups that fight for trans, queer, immigrant, Black, and Indigenous rights. I no longer want to live in a place that sees me as less than human. I no longer want to live on constant heightened alert, wondering when I will need to figure out how to access my health care. I have decided to prioritize myself and my well-being by relocating from Florida.

After researching, I have chosen Colorado as my current destination. This is a state that has some of the best queer protections in the country and has thriving queer communities. While I will never abandon my Florida community, I must play my part in a place where I feel safe and confident. Deep soul searching brought me to the realization that moving to safety is what's best for me and in turn, best for the communities I am a part of.

I am self-employed and make my living solely on my artwork. While I do well for myself in making my bills and living day to day, saving for something like a move is almost impossible. I can set aside a bit here and there when I have a good month of sales, but it's just not enough.

Funds that I raise from this campaign will go towards expenses such as a moving truck, gas and hotel for the trip in my car, lost wages during the month or so I will need to take off, and deposits on a new place/utilities. I also plan to make a flight or two out to Colorado before moving to scout out potential areas of interest.
