One in five trans women report feeling threatened or harassed on an almost daily basis, and 45% of trans women and men report feeling threatened or harassed weekly, compared to 19% of cisgender people. The estimated life expectancy of a Black trans woman is only 35 years old. The most marginalized community needs us to do more.

Trans Defense Fund LA's goal is to provide trans individuals living in Los Angeles with safety kits consisting of various self-defense tools including stun guns, pepper spray, tactical flashlights, window breakers, and an informational pamphlet on how to use each item.

Each kit will cost around $50 depending on taxes and shipping. My initial goal was to provide 100 people with kits, but thanks to all of your donations, we have been able to provide 330 kits from August-December 2020! We want to continue providing kits for the TGNC community this year, and will continue to accept donations.

Transgender women of color were the leaders in LGBTQ+ activism before, during, and after the uprising at the Stonewall Inn 51 years ago, but they have never been put at the center of the movement they helped start.

Black trans women today still have not been prioritized in racial justice or LGBTQ+ activism, despite the fact that they disproportionately suffer from the racism, violence, homophobia, and transphobia these movements exist to combat. Since 2013, more than 130 transgender and non-binary individuals have been killed in the United States, according to a report by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Police violence, anti-transgender violence, housing insecurity, exclusion from healthcare and social services, and unemployment are just some of the challenges that Black trans women face due to discrimination based in their perceived gender and race.

We want to see a world where trans individuals can live freely, thrive, and lead; and we must begin by addressing the fact that the Black trans community needs our support now more than ever because of the urgent need to end the epidemic of anti-Black violence.

When Black trans women are free to live and lead, all trans women of color, all Black people, all trans people, and ultimately all people will be free. Black trans lives mattered then, now, and always will—and they deserve to be protected and prioritized always.
