Trans Safe House for Imo State, Nigeria

Donation protected
International cooperation and community is sorely lacking from trans organising in the UK and Ireland - at the Small Trans Library we are seeking to raise money for Creme de la Creme, a trans organisation based in Nigeria, in order to help them open a safe house for trans people in Imo state.

Creme de la Creme have already successfully opened two safe houses in other parts of Nigeria (Abuja and Lagos). These safe houses provide security, healthcare support, and training and education to our trans siblings there.

As per Creme de la Creme's report on the state of trans life in Nigeria, trans people in Nigeria face widespread discrimination, rejection, and even life-threatening violence - as do trans people all over the world. If we want to build relationships with trans people in other parts of the world, we need to start with an expression of solidarity.

To that end, the Small Trans Library - an autonomous trans lending-library and community support service operating in Dublin and Glasgow - is seeking to raise 24000 euro to open a third safe house in Imo state. This will allow Creme de la Creme to extend their reach to parts of Nigeria where, currently, trans people go without support.

Narrow focus on trans struggles within the nation-state framework of the UK and the Republic of Ireland will get trans people nowhere - our struggle, even and especially around healthcare access, has to have an international dimension from the beginning.

Help us to support Creme de la Creme and secure a safe house for trans people in Imo state and south-eastern Nigeria!

Can You Be Trusted?

The Small Trans Library (@smalltranslibr / @translibrgla) runs a COVID relief fund for trans people in Ireland and Scotland. Since March 2020 we have redistributed close to 20,000 euro to trans people in need. We have plenty of experience working with trans communities, are entirely trans led, and are coordinating directly with Creme de la Creme on this fundraiser. So, yes!

Where Will the Money Go?

Everything will go to Creme de la Creme, and they will use it to open a safe house in Imo state. They already have a safe house in Abuja, and earlier in 2020 successfully fundraised to open one in Lagos.

What support does Creme de la Creme offer trans people in Nigeria?

Creme de la Creme currently operate two safe houses, these are necessary because of the real threat of violence trans people in Nigeria face. Out of these safe houses Creme de la Creme also provide healthcare support, especially around hormone replacement therapy, general community outreach, and access to training to help combat high levels of unemployment in the Nigerian trans community.
