Trans Warehouse Solidarity Fund
The trans warehouse in London is asking for contributions to their solidarity fund in the face of evictions and harassment by their lettings agent, CALM Lettings.
The trans warehouse has been a vital community hub for trans people for years, hosting community events and providing safety and solidarity for trans people in the wider community, as well as a home for many.
Beginning November 2022, CALM Lettings tried to force the tenants of this house to accept a “house manager” system, which would effectively reduce their tenancy status to lodgers, make them vulnerable to eviction on a whim, and make them beholden to a “house manager” who would live with them and act on behalf of the landlord within their home. Tenants of the house therefore refused to agree to the proposed changes.
In retaliation to this refusal to give away their rights as tenants, CALM Lettings initiated a campaign of intimidation in an attempt to force the tenants of the warehouse out of their home. They have specifically sought to replace the trans tenants who had found a place of safety and community at the warehouse with cis people in order to attack their solidarity, make their home fundamentally unsafe, and force them to either accept the shoddy lodger contract or leave.
CALM Lettings has dragged three tenants through court proceedings to grant a “no fault” eviction order, misgendering and slandering them all the while working to make them homeless.
The tenants of the warehouse are asking for solidarity funds for the following:
- Pay off the court fees resulting from the eviction order.
- Make outstanding repairs
- Storage unit for tenants facing eviction
- Support those who have lost work and incurred huge mental and physical health costs due to the stress of facing eviction and the mounting lack of safety in the property.
- Buy communal food for eviction resistance and other solidarity efforts.
- Sustain preparations to keep fighting for the warehouse as a home for trans people.
The three tenants facing eviction have been targeted to break up the warehouse as a home for trans people with secure tenancy rights. Everyone at the warehouse has incurred huge personal burdens for standing up to their landlord, and the wider community has lost a vital space for community events and artistic expression. They urgently need support to continue and to recover after a year of attacks on their home and their community.
