STATIONS OF THE LOST: A Trans Requiem

Donation protected
WHAT WE'RE DOING
STATIONS OF THE LOST is a secular/gnostic requiem, a theatre piece written by Dr. FELIX GRAHAM in collaboration with TRANScend, New York's trans/gender-expansive vocal ensemble, and RANDY POLUMBO, visual artist. The requiem performance and art installation will be premiered at SAINT JOHN'S IN THE VILLAGE on November 20, 2022. The requiem, in oratorio form, will be performed alongside an installation of 14 panels, replacing the traditional stations of the cross with commemorative art pieces honoring the lives of trans artists (both past and present).

Traditionally, memorial works for marginalized people have posed as a mea culpa - looking back in sorrow. While looking back is important, we believe that looking forward is just as important...and a lot more beneficial to the people still living. As such, we are creating new art music in the classical tradition in honor of the national trans day of remembrance/resilience. Not just to celebrate the trans artists who have been lost to violence or societal neglect, but to uplift the trans artists who are with us now.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
TRANScend is a new ensemble and making art -- especially new music! -- is costly. Producing a traditional choral concert in New York City is expensive. Creating new music has further logistical challenges beyond traditional concert production costs. Currently, our expenses are being paid primarily out of pocket, as concert ticket sales do not cover all the costs associated with producing a musical season.

As one of the only all trans/gender-expansive classical choirs currently in existence, our perspective is rarely seen in choral spaces and often lacks the support to create an organization that lasts. Past attempts to create trans art music ensembles have struggled, often because of the lack of community and financial support. We have a vision for the future that goes beyond one performance: STATIONS OF THE LOST is the foundation for more music in the coming year and beyond.

Your support will not only allow TRANScend to produce a new work by and for trans musicians, but you will also be supporting our longevity. We need your help nurturing the growth and development of an innovative, inclusive choral ensemble that's bringing new voices and new audiences to classical music.
