Transporting Desert Dogs!

Amy and I have spent the last few years living part time in Arizona and came home last August with the perfect Mexican/American puppy, Poe, who was sold out of a backpack on the streets of Nogales, Sonora. Since the median age of the rest of Poe’s pack is pushing 10 years old, we began searching shelters and rescues this summer for a more youthful companion and playmate.

What began as an exciting and highly anticipated journey, quickly turned into an overwhelming experience, with almost paralyzing daily grief, as we learned about the countless dogs enduring hot and overcrowded shelters or facing euthanasia through no fault of their own. Arizona shelters and rescues are full and the extreme temperatures (100+ everyday with no end in sight) are forcing more dogs to seek help, resulting in large numbers being brought to shelters everyday.

My heart and conscience will not allow me to simply ignore these horrific circumstances without an attempt to make at least a small difference and save the lives of a few dogs.

Soooooo.... we have rented a van, recruited an extra driver, and are working with organizations both here and in Maine to safely transport as many pups as we can from the overcrowded Arizona shelters and bring them to Maine for fostering and eventual adoption. Our goal is to bring a minimum of 10 dogs with us when we return to Maine in early August.

Obviously, this project is going to be quite an adventure and will also be somewhat costly, We are humbly seeking financial assistance from any fellow animal lovers to help make our rescue dream become reality. Your donation will go toward the cost of the van rental ($1600), gas, dog food, and supplies needed for transport.
