Travel Scholarship Fund: Cville-Winneba Foundation

The Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has organized numerous visits by local residents to Charlottesville's Sister City of Winneba, Ghana.

Participants in these delegations are able to enjoy the vibrant culture and world-renowned hospitality of West Africa.

Visitors also have the opportunity to learn about the origins of slavery and the tragic history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Touring the colonial slave castles along the Ghanaian coast and standing in the "Door of No Return," through which countless African captives were forced at gunpoint onto the slave ships that brought them to the Americas, is a powerful and poignant experience -- especially for the descendants of those men, women and children who were stolen from their homeland, never to return.

Thanks to the Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation, many of those descendants are now able to return -- to learn about their history, to honor their ancestors, and to connect with the Motherland.

Unfortunately, however, travel to Africa is not cheap.  Without financial assistance, it's difficult for individuals of limited means to participate in one of these delegations.

The Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation wants to change that.  We are committed to removing barriers to participation so that more local residents, regardless of their financial status, can undertake one of these life-changing journeys.

Toward that end, in 2018 the Foundation created the Travel Scholarship Fund to help offset the high costs of international travel for community members who would otherwise be unable to afford the expense.

If successful, this GoFundMe campaign will help endow travel scholarships for 20 lower-income Charlottesville residents who wish to join two upcoming delegations to Ghana, in January and May of 2020.

Donors can contribute to the Travel Scholarship Fund and not only earn a tax deduction for doing so, but also derive deep satisfaction from knowing they have helped someone embark upon a truly unforgettable journey and connect with his/her roots.

Donations to the Charlottesville-Winneba Travel Scholarship Fund can be made online via , or by check to:  Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation, 111 Chisholm Place, Charlottesville, VA 22902 (write "Travel Scholarship Fund" in the memo line).

Or you can just click on the “Donate now” button above.

All contributions will be formally acknowledged...and enormously appreciated.
