Supporting Kidnapping Survivor, Samantha Stites
Donation protected
On Friday, Oct 7, 2022, Samantha Stites, a Traverse City resident, and a woman who has dedicated her life to helping others, was violently kidnapped from her house. Her attacker transported her to a storage unit containing a handmade soundproof bunker where she was assaulted and held captive for over 13 hours. The attacker's original intention was to fake her death and keep her captive in the bunker for an indeterminate length of time. Instead, the survivor remained composed throughout the encounter and called on her extensive training in social work to gain the attacker's trust and negotiate her freedom.
The attacker has been stalking this woman for over a decade. While she had a previous PPO against him, her most recent request for a PPO was denied. This attack occurred two months after her denied request. The perpetrator was arrested the day after the attack and charged with kidnapping, torture, criminal sexual conduct, home invasion and aggravated stalking.
Sam has provided updates below as the case has finally worked its way through the court system 1 1/2 years after the attack.
Her expenses and lost wages have far exceeded our original estimate. If you are able, please help us support this incredible and resilient woman as she continues to work to reclaim her life after this traumatic ordeal. All funds raised will go directly to the survivor to help cover medical expenses, legal council, mental health support and lost wages.
