Travis Hockenberry Needs a New Wheelchair Van!!
Donation protected
Hi! Travis Hockenberry is our great nephew. If you know Travis, you know he has an electric wheelchair due to having Cerebral Palsy. Travis's grandparents bought him his first wheelchair accessible van and then, when that one needed to be replaced, Travis was able to use his inheritance from his grandparents to buy a new used van 6 years ago. So, considering Travis is 39 years old this year, he has done pretty well with only having had 2 accessible vans. This family does not waste money! In fact, the current van is a 2006!! Unfortunately, per 2 different reputable mechanics, this van has finally reached its end of life. It is no longer repairable and is considered no longer safe to be on the road.
Travis is setting up appointments with our county's public transit to get to medical appointments. These have to be set up at least 10 days in advance. However, living in a very rural area it's not like he can just go outside and catch a bus to go grocery shopping or to the pharmacy or to a movie or out to eat or visit at a friend's house, etc., like other adults do. And, if you know Travis, he is used to living a pretty active life. He loves movies, going to concerts and drag races, visiting with friends and family on holidays and more. Who doesn't enjoy these things?
We are trying to raise money to get Travis another van. New wheelchair accessible vans are currently running $90,000 to $100,000!!! Isn't that amazing? We are not shooting for something brand new--we want to be realistic. However, we also do not want to get something 15 -20 years old either as we do not want to be in the same position needing another new van in just a few years. We are finding vans in the 5-10 year age range that are priced at $30,000-$50,000. If we reach our goal and find a good van for less than $50, 000 we will use the remaining funds for upkeep on the van.
We appreciate any financial assistance you can provide to Travis. Thank you so much. Glenn and Tammy Maney
