Treatment for Cole Cavanaugh

In the beginning of March, right before COVID, our entire life was turned upside down. Our 21 month old little boy, Cole, was at daycare when they noticed his cheek seemed slightly swollen. We took him to his pediatrician after a week or two when it hadn’t gone away and we were sent to an ENT for a suspected infected gland. After numerous rechecks with the ENT coinciding with a palpable lump in his cheek an MRI was done. Some bone involvement was noted and soon after we were referred to CHOC. A CT and biopsy were performed of the mass and confirmed that our precious little Colely has an extremely rare form of cancer called an “undifferentiated sarcoma”. A CT of his chest and bone scan were preformed and thankfully showed no spread!!! Cole was then admitted to the hospital to have a central line/port placed amongst other tests. Saturday (6/13) will be his first round of chemotherapy. He will be on chemotherapy for the next several months ( every other week) to a year in the hopes to shrink his mass enough to have surgery performed to remove it. Thank you for taking the time to read Cole's story.
