Trees for Parklands 2021
Donation protected
Local Chichester Tree Wardens are fundraising to plant more trees in Parklands, Chichester in 2021.
In 2020, over 40 street trees were funded by our community, using West Sussex County Council’s Donate a Tree Scheme . 20 of these were funded with the help of a GoFundMe appeal , a further 7 by charity Trees for Cities , and others by individuals organising their trees with WSCC direct.
We talked to local people about where they wanted to see new trees and what type of trees they liked, and worked with WSCC’s local Arboriculturalist to choose which tree was right for which space. We also identified at least one nearby resident willing to water each tree, and have thoroughly enjoyed the enthusiasm we found both for our tree-planting project and for trees more generally. It is certainly true that the new trees, planted in November 2020, are making people happy, as well as all the other benefits they bring.
So in 2021, we are running a fundraiser again. We would like to plant a few more street trees (this year requiring a contribution to WSCC of £200 per tree) and, if we are able to identify opportunities for tree planting in other public spaces, to fund some trees in tree-gaps our community identifies in those too. (Parklands public green spaces are mostly owned by housing association Hyde, who we’ve not managed to get to talk to us yet.) Street trees will be planted between the start of November 2021 to the end of February 2022.
If you would like to support this project, please:
1. tell us where you would like to see a tree planted in Parklands; and/or
2. donate whatever you wish that you can afford to put towards this purpose. (Please use the WSCC donation scheme direct, if there is space for, and you would like to choose and wholly fund, a tree outside your home).
We also expect the opportunity in the Autumn to obtain free tiny trees (whips) about 1’ high (with roots half as long!) so please also suggest where you think might suit a “mini forest” or a hedge; and/or let us know if you would like to plant a tree in your garden.
For street trees to be planted this winter, the deadline for donations is Monday 12th July 2021. (This gives us time to finalise and place the donation order with WSCC.)
Approximately 3% of donations will be taken by gofundme for processing fees, meaning we need to raise £206 to fund each street tree. We will donate as many trees as the funds raised allow, putting any remaining monies less than £206 towards other public tree-related expenditure, which may include tree gators (specialist bags fitted around tree bases to help water the tree) and publicity costs.
If you would like to “Mind/Fill the [tree] Gap” in other parts of Chichester/West Sussex, please let us know, as it may be possible to organise separate fundraisers and community conversations for these. And there will be free tiny trees for community/school projects, able to be requested in advance from various sources, if they have landowners’ permission to plant.
With best wishes from your volunteer Chichester Tree Wardens in Parklands,
Paula Chatfield & Rebecca Gabel
