Trevor's Chiari Journey
Last year, Trevor was diagnosed with Chiari (kee-ARE-ee) 1 malformation (part of the cerebellum pushes into the space normally occupied by the spinal cord) and it's
related diagnosis Syringomelia (fluid filled cysts in the spine). Leading up to this diagnosis, he was a healthy, active boy. In April 2015, he was suddenly unable to walk which led to several trips to different physicians before finally getting diagnosed. In July 2015, he underwent Chiari decompression surgery (the surgeon makes room for the brain) to prevent the progression of the Syringomelia. Since the surgery, Trevor is able to be mobile with a walker; however, severe ataxia (lack of muscle coordination in his legs) prevents him from being able to walk on his own. Trevor also has severe fatigue associated with this. Neurosurgeons and neurologists have unsuccessfully tried other therapies to help this, which unfortunately is leading them to feel there is another unknown diagnostic factor. To help find this unknown, Trevor will be headed to Mayo clinic this month. Regrettably, Mayo does not accept the Cottrell family's insurance, forcing them to pay a $5,000 deposit upfront completely out of pocket. There will be several more thousands of dollars they will be forced to come up with as he receives care.
I met amazing Trevor and his family through our own daughter's diagnosis with Chiari. They were our rock through her journey with Chiari and we couldn't have imagined going through it without their 24/7 support with lots of late night "I'm here for you" texts.
Please help provide Trevor with the opportunity, at your earliest convenience, to become a healthy, 12 year old boy.
