As you are aware, our regular karate classes were suspended for a significant portion of time this year due to the Governor’s executive order. We are excited to recently have been able to resume classes and continue to train our students, but the safety and health of our students and families is our number one priority.

Unfortunately, in the 35 years that the Troy Black Belt Academy has served the metro-Detroit community, we have certainly never experienced a situation as severe as this.

As I reflect back on some of our hardest times in recent memory, including the Gulf War in 1991 and the Great Recession in late 2007, I know that we were able to make it through those times because of the incredible members of our Troy Black Belt Academy family. We continued to persevere knowing that at the end of the day, our families would come back for a quality experience at the Troy Black Belt Academy.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has proven to place a much greater financial strain on our small business than any other obstacle we have faced in the past 35 years. Due to circumstances beyond our control, karate memberships are currently down 70% and our after school karate program has shrunk by over 80% (we now service three schools instead of the usual seventeen).

We are committed to continuing to serve our amazing, dedicated families at the Troy Black Belt Academy and want to ensure that we are here to provide our karate and after school services after COVID-19 has passed. However, we have exhausted all options and will not be able to remain in business much longer at this rate.

I am humbly asking for your help in raising some funds to continue to pay our business expenses. Please know that this money will allow us to continue to operate and serve our community for years to come.

Please consider making a small donation to ensure that the Troy Black Belt Academy will be around to make a difference with the next generation of young folks.

I consider myself incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to work with such outstanding students and families over the last 35 years and look forward to future opportunities to bring physical fitness, self-discipline, and some fun into our students’ lives. I look forward to seeing your child again soon during after-school care and at evening karate classes!

With respect and gratitude,

Gary Williams
