Troy's Recovery from SXSW Crash outside HitW

Staff at the Hole in the Wall in Austin, Texas are helping raise money for our coworker Troy Pruitt. Troy is hilarious, kind, loyal, and creative, and since 2016, he has been working at the Hole in the Wall. It's one of the most special places in town, and remarkable people like Troy work there, play music there, and hang out there every day. We are so lucky to be able to work with him. If you've ever closed a bar with a good friend until 3:30am, you know there's no better person than the one who can make you laugh when the hours creep towards early. That's Troy.
The oldest live music venue in Austin still hosting shows, Hole in the Wall had bands playing on Monday, March 13, 2023, and Troy was working on the door checking IDs during SXSW. Around 11:30pm, two cars collided at the intersection right outside of HitW, and one car careened from the road to the sidewalk, where Troy was standing. The impact of the car knocked Troy out of his shoes and trapped him in between the wrecked car and the damaged building.
Troy is okay. He is strong and resilient and will heal. An incredible group of patrons helped move the car away from Troy while waiting for an ambulance, and he is getting superb care from the incomparable staff at Seton Medical Center.
Because of dedicated people like Troy, the HitW community is also strong, and we're going to work with Troy, his amazing partner Romy, his wonderful family, and his coworkers (Troy also has a job working in video game development) to make sure he's well-supported and well-resourced during the physically-, emotionally-, and psychologically-challenging months to come.
We also need help from the Austin community. Troy has health insurance, but his out-of-pocket maximum is $5000. With three surgeries, a metal rod in one shin, and two plates plus screws in the other, Troy's medical expenses met that out-of-pocket max. within 24 hours of being at the hospital. His medications will prevent him from video game work for weeks, and he won't be able to return to the Hole in the Wall until getting through at least three months of physical therapy.
Donations to this fund can include:
- $5 for gas to and from physical therapy
- $30 towards a nice meal delivered at home
- $500 towards Troy's out-of-pocket maximum
- $300 for a wheelchair ramp not covered by his health insurance
- $200 towards a portion of Troy's rent
- $40 towards a bag of dog food for Troy's doggo companion, Muffin
- Or any other amount that works for you
That's Muffin. ^^^^
If you have other ideas for supporting Troy, don't hesitate to reach out. Troy our Boy has already been through a lot, and it'll take our amazing village to help him get back in true Troy style. Love you so much, buddy.
